Elizabeth D. Hawkes, the wife of my 1st cousin 2x removed Harry Kent Bustin, was born on this date in 1914, in Portland, Maine, the third child of Harold Leslie Hawkes and Daisey E. Dolley, and their second daughter.
"Lib," as she was known, grew up in what was known as the Deering District of Portland, on Pleasant Avenue, until she married Harry Bustin in 1935, when she was 21 years old.
Lib and Harry had two children, both daughters, Jean Anne and Dorothy. Harry worked as a shipping clerk for American Can Company in Portland.
Lib was very active in the fraternal organization, The Order of the Amaranth, which is made up of Master Masons and their eligible female relatives. From my great grandmother's scrapbook, here are two clippings honoring Elizabeth Hawkes Bustin.
Lib lost her husband, Harry Bustin, in 1955. She survived him by 18 years, and I suspect they are both buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Falmouth, Maine.
