52 Ancestors: #30 Elizabeth D. Hawkes (1914-1973)

Elizabeth D. Hawkes, the wife of my 1st cousin 2x removed Harry Kent Bustin, was born on this date in 1914, in Portland, Maine, the third child of Harold Leslie Hawkes and Daisey E. Dolley, and their second daughter.

"Lib," as she was known, grew up in what was known as the Deering District of Portland, on Pleasant Avenue, until she married Harry Bustin in 1935, when she was 21 years old.

Lib and Harry had two children, both daughters, Jean Anne and Dorothy. Harry worked as a shipping clerk for American Can Company in Portland.

Lib was very active in the fraternal organization, The Order of the Amaranth, which is made up of Master Masons and their eligible female relatives. From my great grandmother's scrapbook, here are two clippings honoring Elizabeth Hawkes Bustin.

Lib lost her husband, Harry Bustin, in 1955. She survived him by 18 years, and I suspect they are both buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Falmouth, Maine.

52 Ancestors: #29 Frederick Parker Bustin (1886-1965)

Frederick Parker Bustin, my great grandfather, was born on this date in 1886, in Mechanic Settlement, Kings County, New Brunswick, Canada, the ninth of nine children born to Samuel James Bustin and Mary Ross, and their seventh son.

At the age of 18, Fred emigrated to the States, ending up in Portland, Maine. His brothers Benjamin and Thomas eventually left Canada as well and came to Portland.

Fred Bustin As A Young Man

A couple of years later, Fred married Melvina Jane "Vina" Hamilton, a young woman from Upper Stewiacke in Nova Scotia, on May 1, 1907, Portland.

Children arrived quickly for the young couple, first a daughter, and three sons thereafter:

Flora Vesta, b. 1907
Suther Ross, b. 1908
Marvin Howard, b. 1911
and
Laurence Albert, b. 1913

In 1910, Fred went to work for the Maine Central Railroad, and worked at the Rigby Railroad Yard in South Portland.

Fred and Vina always lived in Morrill's Corner, in what was once known as the Deering District of Portland, at first on Morrill St., and afterwards at two different addresses on Stevens Avenue. They always kept a garden, which yielded a substantial crop of corn and pole beans.

Fred worked for the Maine Central Railroad for 50 years, as a section hand, an engine wiper, and a machinist, and in 1960 he was presented with a 50-year pass by the president of the railroad. It was noted in the railroad newsletter.

This is how I remember my great grandfather, whom we all called "Pap."

On Christmas Eve in 1965, Pap passed away at the former Osteopathic Hospital on Brighton Avenue, in Portland, Maine.  He never used his 50-year pass.

He, and "Nana," are buried in Evergreen Cemetery (not far from "the Corner").

52 Ancestors: #27 Lucy Jordan Davis (1795-?)

Lucy Jordan, my fourth great grand aunt, was born on this date in 1795, in Durham, Androscoggin County, Maine, the oldest of five children born to Jedediah Jordan and Rachel Turner, and their first daughter.

She was a sixth generation descendant of the Reverend Robert Jordan and Sarah Winter, who settled on Richmond's Island, off what is now Cape Elizabeth, Maine, in the mid-1600's. Her father was born there in 1758, but moved to Durham around 1785, where he married Lucy's mother in 1790.

In the Spring of 1826, at the age of 30, Lucy married Daniel Davis of Lewiston. According to this record, they were married in Danville, in Androscoggin County.

Lucy and Daniel lived their whole married lives in Freeman, in Franklin County, Maine, and raised nine children:

Joseph, b. 1826
Dorcas, b. 1828
Lucy Jane, b. 1830
James, b. 1832
Benjamin, b.1834
Silva/Silvia, b. 1836
John , b. 1838
Collamore, b. 1842
Charles "Nelson", b. 1844

Their son Collamore fought in the Civil War with the 16th Maine Infantry, and was a prisoner of war, for which Lucy received a survivor's pension.

Lucy lost her husband, Daniel, in 1870, and he is buried in Starbird Corner Cemetery, in Freeman. Lucy is enumerated as being 79 years old in the 1880 census in Freeman, living with her sister Leah, aged 61. She does not appear in the Freeman census rolls 20 years later in 1900.

Undoubtedly, she passed away sometime after 1880, but there is no record of her death or burial. Five of her children, Joseph, Lucy Jane, Silvia, John, and Collamore are also buried in Starbird Corner. It will take some further digging to determine if she rests there as well.
